Networking---is it still working on the net?

After a spate of deaths where Orkut somehow was found to be the common link, this is the biggest question on everyone's lips.

Though there is a huge cry demanding Orkut be banned, the situation warrants a careful thinking rather than acting on impulse. Orkut, voted as the MTV Youth Icon, is a craze which has swept the young and the old alike.

However, in the recent times, those who stand in oppostion of Orkut have gained momentum. Some schools in Kolkata have even issued warnings to students to delete their Orkut profiles. These warnings also say that any student below the age of 18 would stand chances of expulsion if found to be an Orkutian!!

The question that pinches me is that would keeping a social networking site like Orkut out of the reach of many make them safer? It is true that a lot of filth is already spread on this site. Even it is weird being bombarded by friend requests from complete strangers or being at the receiving ends of crap scraps. Nevertheless, quality people who are equally responsible about using the site are also there on Orkut.

I believe that people should learn to exercise their responsibilty and sensible judgement if they want to make the optimum use of networking sites like Orkut etc. by getting connected with like minded people.

So, while the debate continues on whether to ban Orkut or not, enjoy Orkuting, albeit in a responsible manner!

With great power, comes great responsibility, said, Ben Parker, to Peter AKA Spiderman.

How true is this, in case of Orkut! Indians, who, for generations, are used to talk behind the peoples' backs, and conspinre in the comfort of their own home, have suddenly come out to the open field of internet and the open community of Orkut. Here every thing is for everyone to read, from love to hate, from murder to passion. Most Indians are simply not ready for this, they "I should talk anything about anyone",they think, "but why should others say anything about me? even read what I have wrote to my close friend?" It is this mentality that is giving birth to all the complications.

Paeople are not ready to accept other theories than theirs, not ready to accept relations of Friendship, for the sake of friendship. This is another grave problem, Indians are not ready to accept a girl and a boy to be friends, they either HAVE to be bro-and-sis, or lovers!!! Some people are taking advantage of this mentality and luring innocent opposite sex into sexual traps, and hence as almost always, illicit sex leads to violence!

The thing we, Indians, need to do is: CHANGE THE MINDSET, OF OURSELVES, INSTEAD OF CLOSING DOWN ORKUT. Orkut is a site, which brings the people together, in a community, where they can share their minds, their thoughts, in a never before way. And it will be foolish to close down Orkut in India just because some petty criminals and some fools have infiltrated it. It will be like closing down the entire Indian railway Service, just because there has been a terrorist bomb attack on a single passanger train.

I always believe that a medium cannot be the reason of spreading offense. For example, air is a medium and it brings the fragrance as well as stinking smell. In order to avoid the bad odor, as we cannot block the passage of air in our life, the mediums like water, transport, radio, television, internet (orkut comes inside that) can never be a reason to be shelved.
